Making Good Strokes
All strokes (except jump strokes) should be played with a smooth swing of the mallet, letting the mallet — not you — provide all the force. Follow through.

You cannot judge the angle at which to strike a ball by standing over it; begin your preparation for the stroke by walking along the line on which you wish to hit the ball from a few yards back (stalking the ball).

The line of the shot will be controlled almost entirely by the position of your shoulders. It is no use adjusting the angle of the mallet head once you have taken your stance. If it feels wrong, stalk the ball again.

  • Swing the mallet about the shoulders — flex the wrists as little as possible.
  • Stand about 9 inches from the ball with one foot further forward by about 6 inches.
  • Bend the knees slightly to maintain a smooth, balanced swing.

With jump strokes, the ball must be hit into the ground. Stand well over the ball, move your hands down the mallet shaft and hit the ball with a short swing.
