It’s official, playing tennis is the key to a long and healthy life! What better reason to pick up your racket and play tennis more often!
We would like to play tribute to Karen Adams, a tennis member at East Dorset for 36 years, who has recently stepped down from her role as Ladies County Captain after many years of captaincy.
Karen has been a Dorset County Tennis player since 1979 representing Dorset at all age groups, including playing for over 20 years in the ladies county team. She has won many doubles titles during her time as a member at East Dorset, and has also been a member of West Hants Club for 11 years.
Karen assumed the role as Ladies County Captain in 1997 serving on the council and since 2011 was part of the Dorset Executive Committee.
Many members at East Dorset will remember Karen organising the Around the World static cycle challenge which was held at the club in 2011 with everyone wearing pink branded sweatshirts and cycling around the clock on exercise bikes in the function room. This event raised over £45,000 for the Dorset Cancer Centre at Poole Hospital, a cause which Karen decided to raise money for after receiving treatment.
Karen lives in Poole and is currently a Station Manager for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service and the Fire Brigade union representative. In addition to her love of tennis, she is also a keen AFC Bournemouth supporter.
Karen’s many years of service to Dorset tennis was recognised at the recent Dorset County LTA AGM at the West Hants Club.
We are excited to announce a special day of events at the club next Saturday 19th November, to mark the official opening of the new tennis pavilion and to welcome our new cafe and bar caterers. We hope as many of you as possible will come along to show your support!
Here is a timeline for the day:
*We’re marking this special occasion for the club by celebrating the success of our talented junior Louis Allen and to create a fund which will help him to achieve his goals. Louis needs to attend more tournaments to progress in the tennis world, each of which can cost hundreds of pounds. Although Louis has some sponsorship, he would be really grateful for further support.
After the exhibition match between Louis and ATP certified coach James Davidson, you’ll be able to have a go at these activities for a small donation to Louis’ fund:
• Test your serve speed
• Pass the Pro
• Score a point
• Wrong hand tie break
- 12 noon: An exhibition match between Dorset County Men’s Singles Champion Louis Allen and British Tour Coach James Davidson
- 12.30 – 2pm: ‘Have a go’ tennis activities, with donations going to our new fund for Louis Allen*
- 2pm: Official opening of the pavilion by Richard Henshaw, Chairman of Dorset LTA
- 2.30 – 3.30pm: Opportunity to play against Louis or James in club afternoon
- 2.30 – 4pm: Pop along to the clubhouse to meet our new caterers and sample their tea/coffee and cake!

We hope you can join us for a friendly American Doubles tournament on Wednesday evening, to mark the end of this half-term. This will run instead of the usual club evening.
Led by Emma, play will start at 6pm so please arrive a bit early if you can for a warm up and to be sorted into fours. Otherwise please let Emma know in advance that you’ll be attending. It would also help greatly if everyone can play through to 8pm, to ensure that numbers remain constant.
You’re all invited to the clubhouse after play for nibbles and, if you’re lucky, prize presentations!
The mornings are a bit fresher and the evenings are starting to draw in… so it’s that time of year again, time for the Autumn term coaching programmes to begin! East Dorset welcomed the Frost & Co Dorset Open 2016 from Sunday 31st July to Saturday 6th August, supervised by Tournament Referee Kris Dymond.
It was a busy week, with lots of competitive junior and adult matches, singles and doubles, and we welcomed juniors from across the country, including a group of youngsters from Scotland. Play continued despite tricky conditions in the opening days, but fortunately the weather improved as the week went on and the schedule caught up with itself.
For a full round up of results, please visit the LTA Tournaments website:
It was another successful week for East Dorset’s Louis Allen, who came third in the Men’s Singles, runner-up in the 18U Singles and Doubles, and won the Men’s Doubles with partner Liam Hignett – great play Louis!
Thanks to Kris and all the club volunteers who helped make the event a success, including Catherine, Sue and Liz at the tournament desk and all the match supervisors. In total 336 matches were played… so it was certainly a busy week!
Special congratulations go to Charlie Newman, winner of the Betty Booth Sportsmanship Award 2016, who showed great sportsmanship and enjoyment of the game throughout the week.
