Bumper weekend of tennis at East Dorset!

It’s a busy weekend of tennis at East Dorset, with doubles league matches Saturday and Sunday, and junior tournaments on Sunday.  The weather is set fair though and the grass courts are in play, so hopefully there’ll be space for everyone to play their tennis!

Try Something New…

Sunday 5 June is National Croquet day and East Dorset Croquet Club is getting into the swing of things by opening its lawns on the day to any who might like to try the game. Croquet is a game for all, store a game of skill and tactics and it has a handicapping system that makes for a level playing field regardless of skill levels and age. Entry is free and all equipment is provided. All you need to do is bring a pair of flat shoes and turn up at the club in Salterns Road, Poole BH14 8BL at any time between 09.30 and 16.30.

American Doubles fun for the Bank Holiday

Thanks to everyone who played in the American Tournament this afternoon, we had a full house of 24 players on the six grass courts. Conditions were challenging with a blustery wind but it was good fun! There were lots of good rallies and close points, but congratulations go to our winners and runners up: Ladies Winner: Liz Nation Runners-up: Kate Tunks, Sue Eales & Dagmar James Men Winner: Connor Travers Runner-up: Paul Sepping   Missed out this time? We’re planning another one for the August Bank Holiday… see you there!

American Doubles Tournament – Bank Holiday Monday

We might not have the Bryan brothers but it’s American Tournament time again! If you’re free next Bank Holiday Monday (31st May) then do join us for a fun afternoon of mixed doubles from 3pm on the astro courts (or the grass if the weather gods are with us!) bryan bros3 Please report to the clubhouse by 2.30pm for registration (entry fee £2) and to be given your scorecard and a run-through of the rules.  Then we’ll head up to the astro courts (or down to the grass courts) for play to begin at 3pm.  As usual, there’ll be prizes the winning lady and gent, so there’s all to play for!  Prizes haven’t yet been confirmed but they may need to be kept in ice…  We’ll have the usual photocall of players and winners too 🙂 We need a minimum of 12 players for the tournament to go ahead, and we’ve had 9 sign ups so far.  If you’d like to play, please email us by 6pm on Sunday to reserve your place! We hope you can join us for a fun afternoon’s tennis!

EU Referendum Debate – Thursday 19th May at 7.30pm

You’re invited to attend and take part in a Brexit Debate to be held in the clubhouse on Thursday 19th May from 7.30pm.

We have some “Big Hitters” speaking for and against Brexit, including Conor Burns (Bournemouth MP), Andy Ross (Conservative Poole Local Area Co-ordinator), Simon Rowland (co-founder and CEO of Veritas Security) and Simon Boyd (Director of Reid Steel, Christchurch).
Each will speak for 10 minutes followed by questions. These  will have been pre-prepared by audience members and written on pre-printed  cards.
It is envisaged that the formal proceedings will end around 9pm, with time afterwards for informal discussion. The event will be chaired by David Darling.
The event is free and open to members and close friends. So we can have an idea of numbers, please contact David Lloyd if you’re planning to attend on david@lloydy.net  or 07805 521549.

The Western Championship (Association Croquet) – 30th April – 2nd May

Come and watch croquet played at the highest standard. East Dorset Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club are hosting this prestigious event again this year. Ranked 5th in the world, store Jamie Burch will be certain to meet some stiff competition when he attempts to regain the title he last won here in 2014. Croquet Section Open Weekend – 7th and 8th May

Drop in anytime between 9:30am and 4:00pm on Saturday 7th or Sunday 8th May and give croquet a try completely free of charge. We have all the equipment you will need – just bring a pair of flat shoes. You will be met by some of our friendly members who will introduce you to the game and to the club. It’s great fun for all ages and is played by men and women. Come by yourself or with friends and enjoy an opportunity to try a new activity. You might get hooked!

Club’s Got Talent night a roof-raising success!

Last night’s Club Got Talent event was a great success with some virtuoso musical performances and over £650 raised for the club’s development fund. A big thanks to all the musicians who took part, including soloists Brandon on keyboard and James on violin, the Somogyi duet on keyboard and saxophone, Bev Turner’s ‘Poole Ukelele Band’, and the rock supergroup ‘Hard Court Rockers’.  And thanks to David Lloyd for organising!
